Before it evolved into a multi-billion-dollar global empire that completely dominated sneaker culture, Jordan Brand was simply a visionary concept in the mind of a newly retired Michael Jordan. Hand-picking a select circle of elite perimeter stars to champion his lineage, Jordan forever altered the sneaker landscape—and Kendall Gill was right at the center of it.
For Gill, receiving that direct phone call from His Airness was an unforgettable professional milestone that came with unprecedented baseline stability and front-row access to sneaker history.
The Direct Line from His Airness
When Michael Jordan announced his first retirement from basketball, he set out to build a legacy that extended far beyond his own playing days. Rather than letting the silhouette fade, MJ personally reached out to a small hand-picked group of the NBA's sharpest perimeter talents to help lay the groundwork for what would become Jordan Brand.
Speaking with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Gill reflected on the defining moment the phone rang:
"It was a conversation. MJ retired and he called a select few players and said, 'Listen. This is what I want to do. I want you to wear my shoes and I want to put other guys in it as well...'"
That pitch laid the official groundwork for Jordan Brand's launch. Gill became one of the original athletes to lace up a Player Exclusive (PE) on the court, starting with the Air Jordan IX—a shoe he remembers fondly for its performance standard.
"I don't know how many of us it was, but I was thankful to be chosen by MJ to wear his shoes, you know? That was the beginning of the Jordan Brand and we had the Jordan IX which was probably one of the better shoes that I've worn because of the stability," Gill explained. "Then after that, the Jordan X came out a year afterwards and I was just honored to have MJ just to pick up the phone and call me."
The Reality of $10,000 Nike Allotments in Portland
Signing a premier endorsement deal with Nike meant joining an exclusive fraternity, complete with perks that most young athletes could barely fathom. The perks started directly at the team facility before spilling over into legendary off-court shopping sprees.
"First of all, you get all your shoes sent to the arena and the equipment man would take care of all of that," Gill recalled. "But then you got a box of maybe 10 to 12 pairs of shoes and then gear as well..."
However, the real initiation happened when players were brought out to the Pacific Northwest to visit the mother ship.
"Where you got most of your gear was in Portland, Oregon because that's where Nike is, and they would bring you in and you had a clothing allotment where you would go shopping and everything, and that's where you got most of everything, you know?"
For a young star, the sheer volume of products available was enough to push anyone to the absolute brink of retail exhaustion.
"I've spent—and you'd be surprised that when they gave me a $10,000 allotment, you get TIRED of shopping and you STILL have money left on it! You got money for all your cousins, your brothers, your sisters, your mom, your dad and you STILL have money left over," Gill said with a laugh. "So, that was the fun thing about being signed with Nike."
